Firearms Sales Policy: Washington State Laws Compliance

1. General Purchasing Requirements
- Age Restrictions: Minimum age of 18 for long guns, 21 for handguns.
- Background Checks: All firearm purchases, including private sales, require a background check through a licensed dealer or the Washington State Patrol (WSP).
2. Waiting Periods
All firearm purchases are subject to a mandatory waiting period of 10 business days from the initiation of the background check.
3. Firearms and Ammunition Regulations
- Assault Weapons: Washington prohibits the sale, transfer, and ownership of certain "assault weapons" as defined by state law.
- Ammunition Purchases: Minimum age of 18 for ammunition purchases. No background check required, but sellers must verify age.
4. Prohibited Persons
- Felons without restored rights.
- Individuals deemed mentally incompetent or involuntarily committed.
- Persons subject to certain protective orders.
5. Transporting Firearms
- Open Carry: Legal in Washington, but local ordinances may apply.
- Concealed Carry: Requires a Concealed Pistol License (CPL), which involves a background check and safety course.
- Storage Requirements: Firearms must be stored securely to prevent unauthorized access, especially by minors.
6. Firearm Registration
Washington does not require long gun registration. Handguns, however, must be registered at the time of purchase.
